New Volunteering Opportunities for June 2026
Reading Coach
Could you help someone with their reading? The local branch of a charity which helps adults learn to read is recruiting coaches. In this role, you would coach an adult who is learning to read for half an hour twice a week, working at the learner’s pace through a phonics-based reading programme. Sessions take place at approved local venues or online. Volunteers will be provided with ongoing support and two training courses, covering topics such as how to use the programme resources, learning techniques and establishing an appropriate relationship with the reader.
The role would suit reliable volunteers with a non-judgemental attitude and positive respect for others, with an ability to talk and listen in a patient and encouraging way.

Trustee
A Newbury-based charity operates a drop-in centre, providing hot nutritious meals, food packages and support to people who are homeless, vulnerable or financially struggling. As a trustee you will be part of a team overseeing policies, strategies and operations.
It is expected that you would attend the majority of monthly meetings and the AGM. Trustee meetings last no longer than two hours (usually on a Monday evening). They would anticipate trustees will take on ad-hoc activities to support the charity’s aims. The role would suit someone with good communication, teamwork, problem solving and decision-making skills, who can interpret and evaluate management information and other data/evidence. You will have a willingness to be proactive in leveraging your own expertise.

Do you have a sense of adventure and want to support young people? West Berkshire Scout groups are looking for help with running their exciting programmes – Squirrels (4-6 years), Beavers (6-8 years), Cubs (8-10 years), Scouts (10-14 years) and Explorers (14-18 years).
As a volunteer, you’ll help plan and run the exciting programme of activities for the children, as well as go on fun outings. From abseiling to zorbing, camping to coding, they do it all! The role would suit volunteers who enjoy being part of a team and learning new skills.

Art Hub and Ancillary Café Volunteer
A local charity which advances education and appreciation of the arts is looking for volunteers to help in its small café in Newbury. This will involve chatting to patrons, serving drinks (after training on the barista machine) and cake, clearing tables, washing up and helping ensure the smooth running of the café. You would take payments for café sales and potentially art sales. There are also opportunities to help with exhibitions and events.
The café is currently open Thursday through to Sunday and they normally work on a four-hour shift (9:30-13:30 and 12:30-16:30). The role would suit good communicators with a sense of humour who enjoy working in a team.

Chapel Guide
Did you know the only National Trust property dedicated to the First World War is located just a few miles out of Newbury? If you have a welcoming manner and enjoy talking to people, and can give two or more hours each week, you could become a volunteer guide at the property.
As a guide, you will contribute to giving visitors a unique experience, greeting them on arrival and helping answer their questions. That said, no prior knowledge of the property and its history is required – you can learn as you go along and will be supported by staff. Many visitors share their own family stories of the war, and this is an opportunity to share in those stories. The property is open Thursday to Sunday, between March and November each year. From June to August, they are also open on a Wednesday. Time commitment is a morning or afternoon a fortnight.
