Press Release

Philanthropy is alive and well in Newbury this Christmas. Family owned independent department store Camp Hopson and Company is working in partnership with Newbury Volunteer Bureau and together they have created the "Caring Camps Christmas Shopping Day."

More than 100 voluntary and community groups have been invited to come along to the store, where Camp Hopson staff will be ready willing and able to give special attention to less mobile and less able members of the community.

On Thursday 20th November between 9.30am and 5.00pm these special customers will be able to enjoy a festive day with complimentary light refreshments, Christmas Carols sung by local schoolchildren, and of course Father Christmas will be paying a visit to the store to spread festive cheer.

On a serious note Newbury Volunteer Bureau and Camp Hopson wanted to use this opportunity to inform and advise the more vulnerable members of the community about personal security and safety at this time of year. West Berkshire's Crime Reduction Officer PC Dale Schnelting will be in the store from 9.30am to 3.00pm and will be offering information and tips, and a local trading standards officer will be present to offer advice.

One local charity - Link-Up - that supports people with learning disability and provides work training said that 60 of their clients would be attending the day. Jane Hall of Link-Up said "This is a wonderful opportunity particularly as it is a daytime event, and we at Link-Up are grateful to Camp Hopson and Newbury Volunteer Bureau for organising it."

Beccy Farr, Marketing Manager with Camp Hopson, said "We were keen to improve upon the old disabled shopping night, and with Newbury Volunteer Bureau's expertise and advice we are confident that this special day will go really well. Our staff are looking forward to helping and they will receive some awareness training about disability issues."

Garry Poulson, Director of Newbury Volunteer Bureau, said "This is a genuine opportunity to assist the less mobile and less able members of the community on a special day at a special time of year, and Camp's forward-looking philanthropy has made this possible."
